movies

  • save yourselves - far more entertaining than initially expected. this made 2021 the year of the poufe.
  • shirley - elizabeth moss plays menace with glee. not fun, tough to pull away from as well.
  • the assistant - i can’t recall the last time that you loathed a character that you never actually saw on screen so much. oh, and seriously? boner injections are a thing?
  • women in blue (PBS) - predates the murder of george floyd. we have a pretty different take on chief arradondo these days, this doesn’t make him look any better.
  • the trial of the chicago 7 - the follow-on reading (notably this slate slate article) is definitely worth doing. if i’d seen this before november 2020 i would probably wouldn’t have slept for 3 months straight.
  • judas and the black messiah - whoa! there are major gaps in my historical understanding of things.
  • the king of staten island - dumb fun. slightly feel good. oh and marisa tomei is still around!
  • fake famous - :facepalm emoji:
  • bad trip - pure fumb dun.
  • godzilla vs. kong - as bad as you’d expected.
  • nomadland - i left with really mixed thoughts on this one. this defies easy explanation. i get the oscar buzz though.
  • the last blockbuster - get your nostalgia fix.
  • nobody - bob odenkirk delivers. about as dumb as you’d expect, and as fun as you’d expect.
  • a quiet place part 2 - delivers a solid sequel
  • dune - well done, abrupt ending. looking forward to whatever the sequel entails.
  • finch (tv+) - cool robot, hanks.
  • land - there are likely better ways to work through personal grief than subjecting yourself to the unforgiving winter of the tetons without transportation or a weatherized shack.
  • the empty man (hulu) - loved by nihilists? great setup, lackluster ending, some major plot holes and inconsistencies.
  • don’t look up (netflix) - kind of amusing
  • matrix resurrections - my god. this sucked.
  • no time to die - honestly, a lot better than i was expecting.

tv

  • the salisbury poisonings - well, you know how it ends, but it was nice to see public health officials doing the right things for the right reasons.
  • truthseekers
  • top of the lake (hulu) - kiwi gangsters are wierd.
  • broadchurch - totally bingeable and interesting characters. cool twists.
  • servant (season 2 - tv+) - unwatchable, we bailed.
  • plebs (amazon) - fumb dun.
  • COBRA (PBS)
  • behind her eyes (netflix)
  • allen v. farrow (HBO)
  • Q: into the storm (HBO) - seemed pressing at the time. a strong reminder that the world is full of idiots, looking at their fount of stupidity will only make you more sad.
  • the sinner (netflix) - well this was oddly engaging.
  • mare of easttown (HBO)
  • mosquito coast (tv+)
  • the nevers
  • traci ullman show - how have we missed this?
  • the chair (netflix)
  • squid game (netflix)
  • bo burnham inside (netflix) - one of the most interesting bits of artwork to come out of the pandemic. worth it for “white lady instagram”, alone.
  • the handmaid’s tale (hulu) - prepare for 2024. or, welcome to texas.
  • the white lotus (HBO) - nobody’s really likeable.
  • mr. corman (tv+) - bailed. couldn’t parse whatever was going on here. i don’t think the juice was quite worth the squeeze.
  • scenes from a marriage (HBO) - wow, that was pretty great.
  • foundation (tv+) - pretty epic in scope. catching in drips and drabs
  • ted lasso (tv+) - feel good fun. got a little dark and “real” this season.
  • invasion (tv+) - ok, i’m sucked in. this is an interesting way to start an alien invasion series. several episodes later … fuck it, i can’t watch this.
  • Y, the last man (hulu) - ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  • the landscapers - meh, engaging enough. fantastic acting.
  • big mouth (season 3) - netflix - still fun.
  • station eleven - sucked in.
